Church kneelers at
St Andrew
Congham, Norfolk
Church kneelers at Congham, designed by Joan Ross, are a memorial tribute to Susan Gurney, parishioner and the designer and stitcher of ecclesiastical embroideries in Congham church and elsewhere.
The sequence is taken from the Book of Proverbs in which King Solomon spells out his list of the attributes of a Virtuous Woman – ‘She worketh willingly with her hands… she rises while it is yet night… and eateth not the bread of idleness… Her candle goeth not out by night…’ etc.
These are translated into the activities to be found in a Norfolk village. The penultimate kneeler shows images of her work in other churches in a predella-like strip along the bottom. You can find some on this website at Eaton, Norfolk.
Whatever your views on King Solomon, these are a glorious series.
