Church kneelers at

St Mary the Virgin

Steeple Barton, Oxfordshire

Church kneelers here were made between 1994 and 1998 and recall the memory of Gary Jeacock, a lover of the countryside and himself a stitcher of tapestries.

It was agreed that “the theme of the kneeers was to be the countryside – the birds, animals, flowers, trees, etc. – around the Bartons.”  As so often happens, the theme was progressively broadened.  A plump puffin looks round at a dove that has acquired an olive branch.  A tractor asserts rural realities.  A Girl Guide cooks her supper on a camp fire in front of her tent.

Two armorial kneelers and an image of the Sacred Heart within a wreath belong to an earlier period.
