Our guide to
Getting grants
The National Lottery Awards for All programme offers community grants between £300 and £10,000 for kneeler projects.
You need to show how your project or activity will:
- Bring people together and build strong relationships in and across communities
- Improve the places and spaces that matter to communities
- Enable more people to fulfil their potential by working to address issues at the earliest possible stage
A kneeler project designed and delivered by members of your local community for your church – ie your local community building – will probably feature weekly meetings for stitchers and designers for mutual help and encouragement. This enhances designing and stitching skills – ie enabling ‘more people to fulfil their potential’ – and certainly provides an opportunity to reduce loneliness. Your kneeler project is ideally eligible for a community grant.
Go to The National Lottery Community Fund. Read the guidance notes and fill in the application form.
Your budget will be along these lines:
One-off capital expenditure
- Lightbox – Optional, lots of choice on the internet
- Books – The New World of Needlepoint is useful. None are essential but all are enjoyable (see suppliers)
- Appletons – Wools shade swatch, current price £30 (see suppliers)
Cost of materials
- Canvas – Current price just under £12 per kneeler (see suppliers). Your probable minimum aim will be 20 kneelers – but some churches have over 300. Be ambitious!
- Wools – Five hanks of 2ply Appletons Wools @ £3 per kneeler = £15. (see suppliers) This is a generous allowance but you will need a big range of colours at the beginning and the need for further wools will diminish as you progress
- Chip foam – Cut to the size of your kneeler: check current prices at Pentonville Rubber Co
- Sundries – Needles, curtain rings, tape etc.
- Graph paper, laundry marker pens & photocopying – Around £25 (see suppliers)
Volunteer expenses

Best of luck
